The history of snowmobiling in Maine goes back so far that there were no snowmobiles at that time.

As we can read in the great, “History of Snowmobiling new-window,” by Stephen Campbell, Museum Director at the Northern Timber Cruisers Snowmobile Club, Inc.: new-window   “The Wright Brothers Flew in 1903, the very first vehicle that was built to go in snow wasn’t built until 1908. That was actually the Lombard log hauler designed and built in Waterville, Maine. It was a large cumbersome machine that resembled a steam locomotive, only it had a half track design and front skis.”

Another great tip for the Millinocket/Mid-Maine region is 5 Lakes Lodge. new-window  It is on Route 11 about 7 miles west of Millinocket.  From their website:  “5 Lakes Lodge is located midway between ITS 86 and ITS 83 on the uncrowded ‘Katahdin Loop Trail’. They serve as the home for the Jo Mary Riders Snowmobile Clubnew-window, and have two big Bombardier trail groomers on site. Their dedication to trail grooming is second to none.”

They also sell gas at 5 Lakes Lodge.  That is very convenient, indeed.
